Zatz has served as Vice Provost and Graduate Dean at UC Merced since 2014. A trained sociologist whose research focuses on race, gender, the law, and most recently on immigration policy and its effects on youth and families, Zatz is also on the faculty at UC Merced and has held teaching positions at Arizona State University, Monash University in Australia and the University of Havana in Cuba. In 2017, she received the Julius Debro Award for Contributions to the Profession, Academic Institutions and Criminal Justice by the American Society of Criminology. Despite her administrative duties, Zatz has remained actively engaged in research. In 2015, she co-authored Dreams and Nightmares: Immigration Policy, Youth and Families and has authored or co-authored numerous other books and refereed journal articles. Zatz has been praised for spearheading new efforts to increase the retention of graduate students who are members of underrepresented groups and/or first-generation.
